My passion for amaryllis started as a young girl and the obsession has been growing ever since. My grandma always had a multitude of amaryllis blooming for the holidays. She would display some with houseplants, place single bulb pots in visitor's bedrooms, and give dozens away as Christmas gifts. When I first started growing amaryllis, I would purchase boxed grow kits from the local Tractor and Supply. These kits included dehydrated coco coir, a plastic pot, and a small amaryllis bulb. Generally, these small bulbs produced only one or two flowering stalks. But, as my passion for amaryllis grew, I started to invest in larger bulbs. Amaryllis bulbs are sold in centimeters which is the measurement around the widest part of the bulb. I prefer to purchase 34/36 or 38/40 cm bulbs whenever possible. Larger bulbs will produce more flowers and have thicker, stronger stems than their smaller counterparts. Infact, I've had some 38 cm bulbs put out five flowering stems. These jumbo amaryllis bulbs are a full year older than smaller bulbs and will be slightly more expensive. In my opinion it’s completely worth the extra cost. Most amaryllis bulbs come from Peru, South Africa, Brazil (Southern Hemisphere) or Holland (Northern Hemisphere). These bulbs naturally flower according to their country of origins calendar. Southern hemisphere bulbs are groomed for immediate performance and will bloom just 4-6 weeks after planting. You will often see these amaryllis listed as “Early Blooming” or “Christmas Flowering.” However, amaryllis bulbs grown in the northern hemisphere (Holland) will generally bloom 8-12 weeks after planting. If you want to hold amaryllis bulbs, it’s best to use Northern Hemisphere bulbs. Planting amaryllis bulbs is a fun, quick, and easy endeavor. Amaryllis bulbs prefer to be relatively tight in their pots so choose a container that's approximately 2 inches wider than your bulb. A heavy container with a drainage hole will keep the display from toppling over and from becoming waterlogged. Fill your container halfway full of high quality premoistened potting soil. Set the bulb on top the soil and fill in around the bulb with more potting soil leaving the top 1/3 of the bulb exposed. After your bulbs are planted water around the perimeter bulb. Then keep the soil barely moist, applying approximately 1/2 cup of water per week. Place your pots in a warm area (68-70°F) with bright, indirect light and watch them grow and bloom! Bonus Tip! A 2013 study by Cornell and Kansas State University concluded that soaking amaryllis roots in room temperature water for 12 hours prior to planting resulted in more rapid and uniform early leaf growth, and greater overall early vigor. Read the full study HERE. Reblooming an amaryllis bulb for future holidays is easier than it sounds. As with other flower bulbs, amaryllis use their leaves to produce energy for next year’s flowers. If you want them to rebloom at a certain time you will need to control their calendar. To have your amaryllis flower again at Christmas follow these steps. After blooming, grow your amaryllis as a houseplant for the rest of winter and spring. Give it plenty of light inside the home and keep it watered. After all danger of frost has passed move the pot outside for the summer. The bulb should stay dry, and the soil should be barely moist never soggy. If your summers are wet, you may need to shield the pot from excessive rain. In late summer, stop watering and move the potted bulb to a cool (50-55°F), dark, dry location. An unheated basement is ideal. The leaves will gradually wither as the plant goes dormant. Leave the bulb alone and don’t water them for 2-3 months. After dormancy, bring the bulbs back into a warm area with bright light. Remove all the dead foliage, top dress the bulb with fresh soil, and water well to wake up the bulbs. Amaryllis bulbs increase in diameter as they age and may need repotted every three to four years. To repot, remove the bulb from the container and gently shake off excess soil. Remove the dry scales and repot into the next size pot. Ideally, you want to bring the bulbs out of dormancy 8-12 weeks before you want them to rebloom. Therefore, if you want an amaryllis to be in bloom on Christmas day you would put them into dormancy in August, take them out of dormancy in October, and they should rebloom in late December/early January. Naturally, there are variables, but this is the calendar that has given me the best success rate for subsequent holiday blooms.

Today I'll be talking about my experience with my Amaryllis Bulbs and making them re-bloom for the winter.
This amaryllis tip blew my mind! Cornell and at Kansas State University concluded that soaking amaryllis bulb roots at room temperature (68-70F or 18-20C) for 12-24 hours before planting was an excellent treatment for amaryllis bulbs. Compared to non-soaked control bulbs, the ones soaked for 12-24 hours before planting has more rapid and uniform early leaf growth, and greater overall early vigor. The experiments indicated that a short soak time (1 hour) were of no benefit, and they do need to be longer soaks. Parece uma cebola, mas não é; nasce uma flor exuberante de seu bulbo, mas não é tulipa. Quem lê a frase, pode pensar que se trata de um enigma mas, é o amarílis, uma planta tropical que dá flores imensas e lindas. Nossa jardineira Carol Costa explica tudo sobre o amarílis, também conhecido como açucena ou tulipa brasileira. O amarílis (Hippeastrum x hybridum) é uma planta tropical e nativa da América do Sul. Então é uma planta que está acostumada como nosso clima quente e úmido. O seu bulbo, similar à uma cebola (que também é um bulbo), funciona como uma cápsula de planta-instantânea. Nas condições certas, ele começa a absorver água e brotar. Se você corta o bulbo, verá dentro dele todas as partes da planta, até mesmo, os botõezinhos das flores. Enquanto a planta começa a espichar as folhas e florir, a "cebola" vai secando no processo. Enquanto isso, longe dos nossos olhos, acontece uma mágica debaixo da terra: novos bulbilhos se desenvolvem. Isso quer dizer que, diferente da tulipa, o amarílis brotará no próximo ano e, provavelmente, surgirá mais de uma planta. Se já estava achando uma planta generosa, prepare-se pra ver várias flores saindo de um mesmo bulbo – é uma fartura! Esses bulbos são produzidos na cidade de Holambra, pelo Grupo Terra Viva (🤍 o maior produtor de amarílis no mundo! O grupo produz mais de 20 variedades de cores da nossa tulipa brasileira! Vale conversar com uma floricultura local ou o seu garden center preferido e pedir pra encomendarem a planta, já que eles são comercializados somente através do Veiling Holambra. Um truque: quando a amarílis abre suas flores, você pode cortar o pólen imaturo, ou seja, antes dele começar a ficar amarelinho. É só ir lá nas anteninhas do miolo da flor e, com uma tesoura, cortá-las. Tem três bons motivos pra você fazer isso: 1 - o pólen mancha a roupa; 2 - ele diminui a duração das flores; 3 - o pólen é tóxico, se ingerido, principalmente, por pets. Quer mais dica? Então lá vão duas em uma: segure a vontade de arrancar as palhinhas do bulbo. Não pense que é uma cebola pronta pra ser cortada, é uma planta que brotará e dará flores lindas. Dois motivos pra não descartar as palhinhas secas: 1 - dá um efeito rústico muito bonito no vaso; 2 - previne a desidratação do bulbo. No vídeo, nossa louca das plantas mostra como criar um arranjo plantando vários amarílis num vasão alto, bem estiloso. Anote os materiais e acompanhe o passo-a-passo: – tesoura de poda (STIHL) – vaso alto esmaltado – vaso de plástico – substrato arenoso – isopor – substrato pra mudas – perlita A rega é bem simples: molhe sempre o substrato, evitando molhar a planta ou os bulbos. E, antes de regar, dedômetro (tem link aqui em baixo), pra verificar se a terra tá bem seca, já que fungos podem aparecer e apodrecer a planta. Bobeou e o bulbo começou a apodrecer? Desplante-o, deixe secando num local arejado por algumas semanas, plante-o novamente. Se tiver alguma parte que apodreceu, corte com uma faca e passe canela em pó. Depois da florada, prepare-se pra um montão de folhas em forma de fita, bem longas e com um efeito bem bonito. Curta a folhagem e, aguarde; ano que vem tem mais flores! Fica só de olho em lagartas, tá? Obaaa o vídeo de hoje é sobre o AMARILIS, conhecido como Tulipa Brasileira ou Açucena. O amarílis é uma planta bulbosa como uma cebola. Dentro desse bulbo ele armazena água e nutrientes e isso faz dele uma planta muito resistente, que tolera inclusive ficar fora da terra no seu período de dormência. Dentro de cada bulbo já existe a quantidade de flores e folhas que a planta vai ter durante o seu ciclo de vida e durante esse período ela também já vai preparando filhotinhos que são os bulbilhos que ficam conectados no bulbo mãe. A gente só deve retirar os bulbilhos quando eles já estiverem maiores e já formando folhas. Cada bulbilho atinge a maturidade e começa a produzir flores a partir do 3º ano, mas é uma média, isso pode variar. As cascas fora do bulbo funcionam como proteção, então não é necessário retirá-los. O amarílis é uma planta originária das Américas e pode ser cultivada em todo o Brasil. O amarílis entra em dormência após o seu período de floração, isso quer dizer que ele perde as flores, as folhas e o bulbo fica quietinho... e depois de alguns meses, no seu soninho reparador ele volta a brotar e dar flores. Então nunca jogue fora seu amarílis achando que ele morreu, porque ele pode estar em dormência. Inclusive a maior dúvida que as pessoas têm é quando a planta está em dormência, se precisam retirar o bulbo da terra ou não. E a reposta é que é opcional... Como ele tem todos os nutrientes armazenados dentro do bulbo ele pode ficar fora da terra sim. Algumas pessoas dizem que se retirarmos o bulbo da terra e guardarmos na geladeira até a hora de plantar simularemos uma variação brusca de temperatura (que acontece entre as estações do ano em regiões que tem as estações bem definidas) e que isso pode estimular novas flores. Porém o próprio produtor de bulbos diz que ele pode permanecer na terra devendo ser irrigado uma vez por semana nos primeiros 5 meses e após esse período não irrigar mais para o bulbo entrar em dormência e voltar a florescer na Primavera. LUMINOSIDADE Uma condição essencial no cultivo que vai fazer com que a planta produza flores é a incidência do Sol. O amarílis é uma planta que pode ser cultivada a sol pleno ou a meia sombra recebendo pelo menos 4 horas de sol por dia. Quem mora em regiões muito quentes o ideal é colocar a planta num local que receba o Sol no período da manhã, que é mais fraco e assim as flores quando abertas irão durar mais. Também evite molhar as flores e retire o pistilo para maior durabilidade da flor, (além de que o pistilo é tóxico). Plantas que crescem demais, ficam muito compridas, estão recebendo pouca luz e estão se esticando em busca de mais luminosidade. PLANTIO Para fazer o plantio a gente precisa utilizar um substrato rico em matéria orgânica e com excelente drenagem porque já que o bulbo armazena água dentro dele nós não podemos deixar o solo encharcar. O vaso não precisa ser muito fundo porque a planta não tem raízes longas e podemos plantar outras junto, que não sejam invasivas. Eu prefiro vasos mais pesados porque a planta quando florida fica pesada e pode tombar o vaso. É preciso plantar em vasos com furos para que o excesso da água da rega ou da chuva escorra com facilidade. Fazer as camadas de drenagem também é bem importante para facilitar este processo. Para plantar vamos enterrar a maior parte do bulbo deixando só a parte superior para fora da terra. Deixar o bulbo todo aparente é mais uma questão estética para comercializar a planta, para o cultivo o ideal é cobrir o bulbo. REGA A rega deve ser feita sempre que tocar o solo e sentir que ele está seco, nunca deixar o solo encharcado porque o bulbo pode apodrecer. Lembrando que quando não tiver nem flores e nem folhas o bulbo estará em dormência e você pode suspender as regas. PRAGAS O principal problema que se tem com os amarílis é com as lagartas. Então para prevenir ou se você observar qualquer sinal de lagarta você pode utilizar um controle biológico como o Dimypel ou outro inseticida de lagartas como o Forth e que eu irei deixar o link nos comentários do vídeo. As variedades de amarílis que plantei são: - Sydney - Flaminco Peacock - Estrela - Blossom Bingo - Intokazie - Double King É indicado fazer o plantio até 4 meses depois da data de embalagem dos bulbos que vem descrita no rotulo.
