Benoit is 36 years old (in 2019) and just like society expected, he had a job, an apartment, a car & the right amount of friends. It looks like a micro-car. It rides like an electric-assist bike. The ELF (“electric, light, fun”) is a solar car-bike hybrid that will keep you out of the rain, or from breaking a sweat, and perhaps convince you to jettison your car for all those trips around town (and to get into shape while you’re at it). Inspired by solar/human-powered aircraft pioneer Paul MacCready, decades ago Rob Cotter began experimenting with human-powered vehicles. He left a job at Porsche to consult though things slowed down in the nineties when ”people were more interested in minivans and SUVs and things.” He decided the moment had arrived when, at the end of the nineties he began consulting for the New York City bike sharing, “and realized that if NYC’s putting in about 300 miles of new bike trails there’s a market for vehicles like this,” explains Cotter, “Bicycles that could get people up the hills easier, get them out of the weather, be safer, not tip over, carry passengers, carry a payload, have turn signals, brake lights, all of those things and just started going in that direction from that point on.” In 2012 he founded Organic Transit- alongside his wife Maureen Costello- in an old furniture store in downtown Durham, North Carolina. To move things along quickly, they launched using an agile design process. “Originally we sold about 50 on kickstarter. We knew we were losing money on each one, but it allowed us to get the vehicles out there and make the changes. So since that time 3 years ago we’ve made about 400 changes to the ELF.” Today, the ELF is a 160 pound (72.5kg) vehicle that can carry up to two adults (or an adult plus 2 children) or an adult plus 500+ lbs (226 kg) of cargo (there’s space in back for a dozen bags of groceries. Starting at $7,000, it’s classified as a 'bicycle' by US law so it can't legally go faster than 20 mph on just electric power (though pedaling and hills will speed things up). With a lithium-ion battery and mid-motor drive, it has a range of 48 miles per charge (and further if you pedal). The rooftop solar panel will recharge the battery with 7 to 8 hours of sun or the battery can be removed and plugged into a wall for a 2.5 hour charge. Since it’s technically a bicycles, the ELF can be driven on bike paths and parked on sidewalks. “So our goal was to be able to take a car-like experience and turn it into a bicycle,” explains Cotter. “This will go anywhere a bicycle will go, all bicycles can ride on many streets, all secondary roads and things like that. It’s like a car except that it’s 160 pounds so it’s a car that you can actually pedal. Convert your own bike: 🤍 Why is my 100 watt solar panel only giving me 75 watts? 🤍 Here's how the solar trailer performs under challenging conditions. Instantaneous readings of solar, motor and pedal power are displayed across the top of the screen. This is about 2-3 hours before sunset on a hilly, twisty, tree-shaded road. I picked this route and time of day not because they're representative of typical touring conditions but because watching a rear view camera going in a straight line with no shading would be boring. Huge thanks to Justin, Teklektic and everyone who worked on the solar firmware for the CA over at Grin Technologies. I've logged over 2000 miles (3000 km) with various solar setups over the years but I've always used two CA's and mostly had to make do with quick glances at the CA's while riding and jotting down totals at each stop. The combination of video and telemetry overlay is a game changer for solar bike design. I hope this helps others who are looking to build their own solar rig. I've uploaded the log data to the Grin Trip Analyzer here: 🤍 Note: The Wh totals are a bit out of step with each other. The solar and motor Wh are from the start of the trip while the human Wh are from the start of the video (3 km into the trip). This is because the log contains Ah for solar and the motor controller but only instantaneous human watt readings. I power cycled the Analogger and CA at the start of the video to make it easier to sync the data with the video. Tools used: CA3 with solar firmware, modified GPS Analogger with Hall sensor for solar charge current, Sempu Gen3 bottom bracket (uncalibrated), GoPro Hero 5 Session for video capture, DashWare for telemetry data screen overlay (running on a 12" MacBook under VMWare), Final Cut Pro to add the yellow markup and to edit the footage down to 5 minutes (from about 25).

Solar Powered E-Bike (Trike) Designed to Reduce City Traffic


The Veemo is an incredible fully enclosed electric assist bicycle with an 80 Watt solar panel on the roof to trickle charge the battery. It was designed by VeloMetro to be a shareable vehicle in Vancouver and eventually in cities around the world. The idea is that people can rent these e-bikes and use them as an extension of the public transportation system in a given city. The electric assist makes it possible for people with different fitness levels to use the bike, and to get around the city without breaking a sweat or getting wet if it's raining. This ebike can go up to 30 km/hour and the battery gives it a range of 100km. To operate these electric bikes as a fleet, but without having expensive infrastructure, VeloMetro plans to have a battery swap system with a truck packed with charged batteries who will go around and swap out batteries that are low on power. Kody Baker from VeloMetro thinks these bikes (Velomobiles) will help cities make a modal shift towards getting people out of single occupant cars and into active transportation. The positive impacts of a modal shift would mean fewer cars on the road, less noise and air pollution, more space for bike lanes, and a healthier population. Last week 34-year-old Marissa Muller completed a solo, cross country bicycle ride in 80 days. Her custom bike was powered in part by solar energy, and the impetus for her trip was to show Americans the possibilities of solar power. NewsHour’s Saskia de Melker has the story.

Believing solar vehicles were feasible beyond the lightweight Aptera and Lightyear One cars, Joel Gregory Hayes wanted to create an all-electric, solar-powered motorhome that despite its weight could travel the Pan-American Highway from the arctic circle in Alaska to the tip of Argentina. With the help of Solarolla Electric Vehicles he converted an electric delivery truck (a 2010 International EStar) into an EV with 120kWhs of battery power that is capable of being charged on solar-only for a maximum range of 200 miles. The 24,330W rooftop solar array can be deployed to track the sun. First, 2/3rds of the array that are normally hidden under the van’s main roof for driving can be slid out using winches. Then winches work to track the sun by tilting the array up to a 45° angle. There are also two satellite panels attached to the rear of the van that can be detached and manually maneuvered to track the sun. The Route Del Sol vehicle requires developing a love of Slow Travel: it takes 20 hours to charge the array of flexible solar panels, which in places like Alaska during most of the year requires a few days of patience in one location.
