This week’s data revealed criminal smuggling activities had quadrupled in Tunisia as more than 120,000 people entered Italy alone. “We cannot be resigned to seeing human beings treated as bargaining chips, imprisoned and tortured in atrocious ways,” the Pontiff said in an address. “We can no longer watch the drama of shipwrecks caused by the cruel trafficking and the fanaticism of indifference.”
